Harmonizing a Melody
Now that we have a known melody and some chords [and can switch between them in time], let’s put melody and chords together. We are harmonizing a melody. This means we are adding chords to an existing melody. We sing the melody, while trying different chords.
This exercise is great for beginners. To be successful, we have to feel the pull of the chord change; it’s like a magnet. We learn to predict where the change needs to happen. Which chord to play [once we know when it needs to change] is often found through trial and error, but we do learn to hear which chord will work – in the stream of events, as we practice this more and more.
We need to know which chords are possibilities; have a palette of some kind [there are ways of deriving these possibilities, but this is beyond the scope of this session series].
We will work with the Twinkle melody, and use 3 chords to harmonize it. They are E5, A5, & B3.
